Driving Innovation
The smart building integration project at Manchester Airport was recognized for its excellence, earning the prestigious Lux Award in 2016 for Project of the Year in the Industrial & Transport Lighting category. The award, considered the “Oscar” of the lighting industry, highlighted the project’s innovative use of LOYTEC’s intelligent L-DALI lighting solution to drive energy efficiency in one of the UK’s busiest airports. The win also underscored the value of seamless integration and collaboration between technology partners in delivering large-scale, future-ready smart building solutions.

Project Scope
At Manchester Airport, a smart building integration project was implemented to enhance energy efficiency and operational transparency across Terminals 1, 2, and 3. Led by LOYTEC systems integrator Calon in partnership with Building Environment Controls, the project began in 2013 with the installation of a DALI-based lighting system in Terminal 2 and expanded airport-wide alongside a full LED upgrade. The system integrated over 9,500 intelligent lights and 1,200+ daylight and occupancy
sensors, enabling automated lighting control based on occupancy and natural light levels. Individual control panels connected the DALI network to the BACnet-based BMS via LOYTEC L-DALI controllers, providing dynamic scheduling, real-time monitoring,
and detailed fault diagnostics down to each luminaire. In 2014, integration with the airport’s flight information system enabled real-time lighting adjustments based on flight schedules. The result was an energy reduction of up to 89%, totaling 7 GWh
saved. Built entirely on open protocols, the system now plays a vital role in the airport’s asset optimization and sustainability goals.
